Guide

How to convert WebP images

Use this WebP converter to open WebP images in software that does not support them, or to turn your PNG and JPG files into WebP for a faster website. WebP typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, which is why so many sites now serve it. All conversion happens locally with the Canvas API.

  1. 1

    Add your images

Drop WebP files you want to open elsewhere, or PNG and JPG files you want to shrink for the web. Up to 30 images can be queued at once.

  2. 2

    Choose the target format

Convert WebP to PNG or JPG for compatibility, or convert PNG and JPG to WebP to reduce page weight.

  3. 3

    Adjust the quality

Around 85 percent keeps photographs looking clean while still saving a lot of space. PNG output is lossless, so the quality slider does not apply.

  4. 4

    Convert and download

Each result shows its new size next to the original. Download individually, or take the whole batch as a ZIP.

WebP problems this converter solves

  • A downloaded image saves as .webp and your photo editor or printing service refuses to open it.
  • Older software and some office applications still do not recognise the WebP format.
  • Your website scores poorly on page speed because images are served as oversized PNG or JPG files.
  • You need transparent PNG images converted to WebP without losing the transparent background.
  • A client or marketplace requires JPG uploads but everything you saved is WebP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a WebP file?

Convert it to PNG or JPG with this tool, then open it in any image viewer or editor. Nothing needs to be installed, and the file is never uploaded.

Is WebP better than JPG?

For websites, usually yes. WebP is generally 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at comparable quality and it supports transparency, which JPG cannot do. For maximum compatibility with older software, JPG is still safer.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. Converting a transparent PNG to WebP keeps the transparent background. Converting to JPG does not, so the tool lets you pick a background colour for those areas.

Why can I not select WebP as an output?

A few older browsers can read WebP but cannot write it. The tool detects this and hides the WebP output option, though you can still convert WebP images to PNG or JPG.

Are my images uploaded during conversion?

No. Conversion uses your browser's built-in Canvas encoder, so the image data stays entirely on your device.
