Guide
How to generate a barcode
Use this barcode generator to produce scannable CODE128, EAN, UPC, ITF, MSI, Codabar, and Pharmacode barcodes for products, inventory labels, shelves, and asset tags. Each format has strict rules about what it can encode, so the tool validates as you type and explains what went wrong instead of silently producing something unscannable.
- 1
Pick the barcode type
CODE128 handles any text and suits most internal uses. EAN-13 and UPC-A are for retail products and require an exact number of digits.
- 2
Enter your value
Type the number or text to encode. The preview updates instantly and tells you if the value breaks that format's rules.
- 3
Adjust the appearance
Set the bar width, height, colours, and whether the value is printed underneath. Keep good contrast so scanners read it reliably.
- 4
Download PNG or SVG
PNG is exported at triple resolution for clean printing. SVG stays sharp at any size and is better for labels and print artwork.
Barcode problems this tool solves
- A retail listing needs an EAN-13 image but you only have the number.
- Stock or asset labels need scannable codes without buying label software.
- Other generators accept an invalid value and produce a barcode no scanner can read.
- Printed barcodes come out blurry because the image was exported at screen resolution.
- You need vector output so a print shop can scale the label without quality loss.
Frequently asked questions
Which barcode format should I use?
Use CODE128 for general text and internal inventory, EAN-13 for retail products outside North America, UPC-A for retail in the US and Canada, and ITF-14 for shipping cartons.
Why does it say my value is invalid?
Each format restricts what it can encode. EAN-13 needs exactly 12 or 13 digits, UPC-A needs 11 or 12, and Codabar must start and end with a letter A to D. The message explains the rule for the format you picked.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
PNG suits websites, documents, and quick printing and is exported at triple resolution. SVG is vector, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size and is the better choice for professional printing.
Will these barcodes actually scan?
Yes, provided you keep strong contrast between bars and background, do not shrink them too far, and print at a good resolution. Always test one with a real scanner or phone app before printing a full run.
Can I sell products with a barcode I generated here?
This tool renders any number you supply, but retail EAN and UPC numbers must be officially allocated to you by GS1. Generating the image does not assign you ownership of the number.
